Iconfinder offers over 1.5 million beautiful icons for creative professionals to use in websites, apps, and printed publications. Whatever your project, you’re sure to find an icon or icon set to match here.
In fact, describing the graphics listed here as icons is somewhat limiting as many of them are available in vector format and can be scaled up to whatever size you need. This means they can also be used to create graphics and illustrations for your website, blog, or other media.
Icons are organized into icon sets and there are over 37,000 icon sets to choose from. You can either search for icons with a keyword or phrase, or browse icon sets by icon category or style:
Once you’ve selected a category or style, you can sort the results by latest or popularity. You can also choose to filter out premium icons if you’re just looking for free icon sets.
Here’s an example of available icon sets in the social media category:
The search function is actually one of the most useful features of this site, as it can be really difficult to find a specific icon sometimes. You’ll be surprised at the number of icons you can find for even obscure queries. For example, here’s the search result for “flamingo”:
Search results can be filtered by style (glyph, outline, flat, filled outline, photorealistic, 3D, hand drawn, cartoon, pixel, or smooth), icon format (vector or any), price, license type, icon size, and background colors.
All these options make the search a very powerful tool to find exactly what you’re looking for.
When you click on an icon, you’ll get information about the sizes it’s available in, the file formats and license.
There’s also a link to view all the icons in the set, which is helpful if you’re looking for a selection of items with the same style, rather than just a single icon.
If you find a designer with a particular style you like, you can also click the “Designers” link in the menu at the top of the page to browse icon sets organized by individual designers. You can also click on the designer’s name of an individual icon or icon set to see their profile page.
From the designer profile page, you can search for icons created only by this designer, filter icons by style, follow the designer, or send a message. This can be useful if you want to use a particular icon outside of the license it is sold under on Iconfinder (see more details about this below) and so you can arrange terms for usage and payment directly with the designer.
Note: the messaging feature is only available to Pro subscribers.
You can check the license terms for each icon before you buy or download. Most premium icons on the site are listed under the basic license. This gives you rights to use an original or modified version of the icon in:
- Printed material
- Online content
- Computer games
- Multimedia content
- Smartphone and desktop apps
This license does not allow you to:
- Resell or redistribute the icon, even for free
- Use the icon on a website or bulletin board in downloadable format
- Use the icon in material intended to be reproduced by a third party such as a template
- Use the icon as part of a logo
- Use the icon on physical items for resale
- Use the icon in pornographic, libelous, obscene or defamatory Material.
Some examples of cases where you are not permitted to use these icons:
- As part of a WordPress theme or other website template
- On a t-shirt or mug that you list for sale
- In your company logo
If you do want to use an icon for one of these examples or a similar usage that’s not permitted under the licensing terms, you can contact the icon designer directly (if you are a Pro subscriber) to arrange individual usage terms and payment outside of the Iconfinder system.
In the unlikely scenario that you can’t find the exact icon you want in Iconfinder, or you just want to create a unique icon that you know nobody else will be using, you can order a custom icon through the site.
You start by filling out a design brief, which selected designers will respond to. You then choose who you want to work with and agree on payment. Iconfinder holds the payment until you are happy with the final result.
Prices for custom items usually range from $70 to $130 per icon.
Iconfinder Pricing and Membership Plans
If you’re only looking for free icon sets, there are plenty of those available at Iconfinder and you can filter searches to show only free icons.
However if you don’t want to use the same icons as everyone else, and want a more professional look and feel for your site or publications, choosing a premium icon set is advised.
Premium icons are priced individually, with most being between $1 and $2. You can save money by buying the whole icon set and most sets range from around $5 – $20 for a varying number of icons.
However, it’s much more economical to buy a membership, which allows you access to download any icons, and this is particularly true if you take advantage of the offer to get 50% off your first month of membership.
Starter membership is priced at $9 per month and allows a single user 25 downloads each month. This means you can download 25 icons for just $0.36 each.
Even better value for money is the unlimited membership, which allows unlimited downloads for only $25 per month. With this membership you can download as many icons as you want within a month and you’ll only pay $25.
If you regularly use a lot of icons or need new graphics on a daily or weekly basis, paying monthly for access is a great deal and will save you a lot of time thanks to the powerful search feature on the site. Additional users can be added to your premium membership for only $19 per month.
You can also get 2 months free membership if you pay for an annual membership rather than paying monthly. This option is available for both the Starter and Unlimited membership plans.
